Tokyo-based design site, PingMag, has a short but interesting article on Japanese tattoo master Horiyoshi III. In addition to some Irezumi 101 background, the article includes fun quotes on the difference between the hand-poked (tebori) method and machine tattooing–both used by Horiyoshi–and how he builds the tattoo work together with the client.

A tattooed Lamborghini is sure to stop anyone in their tracks. It’s hard to tell whether this design was painted on or if its just a very well-conceived sticker body kit. Either way, this is one automobile I would drive, without even thinking of the environment. Screw the environment, man, I’ve got a tattooed Lambo.

We posted up the science tattoos last week, so I suppose it’s only fair to point to these science-like tats… The arm one is my favorite.

Samuel Mullin has a full sleeve’s worth of beautifully executed Super Mario tattoos — his site has a small gallery of them. He’s doing a Zelda sleeve next for the other arm. He says he was inspired by a childhood spent in a military family, passing many days stuck in residential hotels, playing NES.

Getting inked is a big commitment. Whether you carefully choose a meaningful design or get one on a drunken whim, tattoos are meant to be permanent. Successfully removing one involves thousands of dollars in laser surgery, often with multiple procedures. In light of these costs, many people resign themselves to living with a tattoo they’ve outgrown, or they choose not to get one in the first place.

Where else would you find a tattoo convention sponsored by famous coffeeshops — the kind that don’t serve double mocha soy lattes — but in fabulous Amsterdam. From June 8-10th, tattoo artists and lovers from around the world will converge on the city for its International Tattoo Convention.

There are three articles over the past few days that address visible tattoos at work. While they deal specifically with Florida teachers, the US Marines and the FBI, the discussions of dress codes and tattoos is interesting (sometimes even funny) to those working outside those fields.

The tricky thing about tattoos is that they are for life. Permanent. Forever inked into your body. People always talk about getting a silly tattoo, but usually that’s all just talk. Then once in awhile you hear about someone getting a really bad tattoo. My favorite bad tattoo example is either an 8-ball or a donkey on a surfboard smoking a joint. But now I guess I need to add room to that list.
