Matthew Clowney’s most recent series of work, Families, consists of portraits of today’s typical families: atypical. There is a social context, therefore. But the photographs also display an eerie boldness, as though the families are saying to the viewer, “This is who we are. What of it?” The camera catches the individuals in the act of being captured in a photo moment; they are not relating to one another or interacting. But it is a moment all the same: of who we are as we choose to present ourselves. Viewing these photos once is not enough; the viewer is repeatedly drawn into the scene. (Also interesting to note that Matthew Clowney was once assistant to Tina Barney.)

This is something that I just might consider using in the office if my workplace were a little less conservative. A mana mug will have you instantly identified as a unabashed supergeek. Everyone needs cups, and most geeks drink coffee, so Splitreason could be onto something here (if you don’t drink coffee, you can always fill it up with that sugary sweet Mountain Dew, or my personal favorite Guarana Antarctica).

Ever had Grandma Edna email you her latest vacation cruise photos, only to find the images so small and pixelated that she and Gramps look like they were made of LEGOs?

Byung-seok You’s coffee, tea, and delicious morsel-warming concept, Natural Wave, is aesthetically attractive, functional, and doesn’t require an outlet. The ceramic tray’s feet nestle cozily into any radiator’s gaps, securing it into place. Climate-controlled beverages and toasty snacks make the occasional burn and obnoxious steam noises not seem as bad…

Simon Duff’s Mushroom floor lamp provides a sense of magical wonder in an otherwise ordinary living space. The Australian designer forwent psychedelic swirls and Grateful Dead bears for tastefully realistic form and color treatment. Mushrooms, illuminated by interchangeable and adjustable LEDs embedded in their gills, can be placed as single units or in clusters for a more fungified effect.
